Colombian Christmas

Yummy Christmas Treats

With the holiday season in full swing, I remember about my first Colombian Christmas.  It was different from what I was used to and was a really fun experience.  One of my favorite things about the holiday in Colombia was the food.  Around this time of year, all the bakeries are making buñuelos.

In Bogotá where we were living, there was a bakery on every corner.  Each one had a big pot out in front frying up these delicious treats.  They are made from cheese and flour and rolled into a ball and deep fried.  Not something you would want to eat all the time but they are really tasty.

Candles Day

Another thing that stood out was candles day.  Everyone would buy these small colored candles that they would place outside and light on December 7th. The celebration is in honor to Virgin Mary (Colombia is a Catholic country).  Then they would sit around and eat the bunuelos or other yummy treats while watching the candles melt.

Novenas

The last thing that was really interesting was the novenas.  These are gatherings where people sing some songs and read prayers for Virgin Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. People do this for nine days until December 24th, when baby Jesus is born.  At the end of each novena, they all eat some snacks.  We found these everywhere in Bogotá.  Even grocery stores put on events for this.  If you are trying to watch your weight a Colombian Christmas is not the place to be.

No matter what, it was a cool experience to see how other people celebrate the holidays whether it be Christmas or something else.  Have you ever went somewhere and celebrated a holiday with someone that had different traditions than you?  We would love to hear your story in the comments below.
