Common Mistakes Spanish Learners Make

Mistakes You Might be Making in Spanish

In this video, we are taking a look at some of the common mistakes Spanish learners make.  Now everybody makes mistakes when learning a language.  If you make them, it is OK.  It is part of the process and if you focus and pay attention, you can correct them over time.

Maria is going to take us through 5 common mistakes Spanish learners make and show us how to fix them.  If you would like to see some other common errors you can check out part 1 in this video.

1. Using mejor wrong

A common error that Spanish learners make is to say más mejor.  This will hurt a native Spanish speakers ears and the right way to say it is mucho mejor.

Don’t Say – Más mejor

Say – Mucho mejor or just Mejor

2. Using rompió to mean something is not working.

It is common in English to say the car is broke.  But in Spanish, you would not use that word because it would mean that whatever you are talking about is in pieces.  Like literally broke into a bunch of parts.  You can use these words instead… Estropearse, Averiarse, Malograrse

Don’t Say – El carro / coche se rompió.

Say – El carro / coche se averió

3. Don’t say tiempo when talking amount of times

One time you have probably done this error.  It can happen several times if you are not careful.  Make sure when you are wanting to use “time” in this context you use vece rather than tiempo.

Don’t Say – Dos tiempos al día

Say – Dos veces al día

4. Yo creo ….

When you are using creo or pensó you need to follow it up with que afterwards.

Don’t’ Say – Creo deberíamos

Say – Creo que deberíamos…

5. Ar, Er, or Ir and the beginning of the sentence.

When you have a word with ar, er, or ir at the beginning of the sentence you can not mess with its infinitive form.

Don’t Say – Comiendo frutas es necesario

Say – Comer frutas es necesario
