How to Express Obligation in Spanish

Cómo expresar obligación

Do you know how to express obligation in Spanish? In this video, we are going to learn how to talk about your obligations using three simple expressions.

Tener que

The first way to express obligation in Spanish would be saying “tener que” + verb in infinitive (-ar, -er, -ir). This translates as “To have to…”, obviously you will need to conjugate the verb depending on who is having to do the action.

Deber

The second way to express obligation is using the verb “deber”. You will conjugate it and again, use a verb in infinitive. This one could translate as “I must…”

Hay que

The last one and easiest one is saying “Hay que” plus a verb in infinitive. It is an impersonal way to say it, meaning there is no subject, therefore, no conjugations are necessary! yeyyyy!!

Now that you know 3 ways to express obligation in Spanish, check out the video to see if you can answer the questions correctly at the end of the video.
