How many ways to say…

All languages change over time and vary according to place and social setting. We can observe lexical variations – differences in words and phrases – by comparing the way Spanish is spoken in different places and among different social groups.  Let’s take a closer look at lexical variations in Spanish.

There are over 20 countries where Spanish is the official language. It is no surprise, that there are so many ways to say one thing. This post will be growing over time, but for now I will leave you with some of the biggest variations for a couple of words:

  2. Bombilla: Bolivia, Chile
  3. Calimete: Dominican republic
  4. Cañita: Perú
  5. Carrizo: Panamá
  6. Pajilla: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras Nicaragua
  7. Pajita: Argentina, Chile, Spain, Uruguay
  8. Pitillo: Colombia, Venezuela
  9. Popote: Mexico
  10. Sorbete: Argentina, Ecuador, Perú
  11. Sorbeto: Puerto Rico
  12. Caña: Spain

  3. Perrito caliente: Spain
