Means of Transportation in Spanish. Using the Right Preposition

Talking about Transportation in Spanish

There is a lot of vocabulary to learn about means of transportation. Really, everything that can take us from one place to another is considered a means of transportation. The verbs we will typically use to talk about this topic are: Montar (To ride), Ir (To go), Venir (To come).

Something you need to keep in mind is the use of prepositions depending on the means of transportation of your choice. For instance, if you are riding a car, or a bicycle, use the preposition “en”. If you are riding a horse, or going by foot, use “a”.

Montar en carro (coche, automóvil), en moto, en bicicleta. You can also choose to say: Montar a caballo, ir a pie.

The following graphic has some examples with other conventional and others maybe not so conventional means of transportation.

As you might know, in different Spanish speaking countries, there are different ways to say the same word. The most common way to hear the expression “to ride a bicycle” would be “montar en bicicleta” or you can shorten the noun and say: “montar en bici”.
