Parecer and Parecerse in Spanish

The Distinction Between Parecer and Parecerse

Clearing Up the Confusion

Have you ever found yourself struggling to understand the difference between parecer and parecerse in Spanish? If so, you’re not alone! These two verbs can be confusing for even advanced Spanish learners, but don’t worry – we’ve got you covered.

In this video, we’ll explain the difference between parecer and parecerse and provide some examples to help you understand how to use these verbs correctly.  This video was inspired by a message from one of our students.  In the message the student wrote “esta comida se parece deliciosa”.   He was trying to say  “That food seems delicious”.  But what he wrote in Spanish was not correct.  Why?

Parecer

Parecer is a verb that means “to seem” or “to appear.” It is used to express what something looks like or what someone thinks about something.

For example:

La comida parece deliciosa. (The food seems delicious.)

Me parece que va a llover. (It seems to me that it is going to rain.)

Parecerse

On the other hand, parecerse is a reflexive verb that means “to resemble” or “to look like.” It is used to describe how two or more things are similar in appearance.

For example:

Ella se parece a su madre. (She resembles her mother.)

Los gemelos se parecen mucho. (The twins resemble each other a lot.)

It’s important to note that “parecerse” must always be used with a reflexive pronoun (such as “se” in the examples above).

In summary

Parecer is used to express what something looks like or what someone thinks about something, while parecerse is used to describe how two or more things are similar in appearance. With this understanding, you’ll be able to use these verbs with confidence in your Spanish conversations!
