Interjections in Spanish

Do you know about Spanish Interjections?

Interjections are words that represent exclamations, surprise, and feelings. Usually, when we write them in Spanish we use exclamation marks (¡!), since they express surprise. Sometimes their meaning depends on intonation. It’s not the same to say: ¡Ay! (sadness) to saying ¡Ay! (pain) Let’s see some examples about interjections:

¡Orale! This word with Mexican origins can be used to show surprise or hurry: “órale, ¿ya viste el precio?”; “órale, no tengo todo el día”.

¡Ushh! This word can show disgust or disappointment. “¡Ushh qué película tan mala!”

¡Ay! This interjection can express pain, sadness, and also tenderness.

¡Huy! We use it to show pain, surprise, amazement or suprise. We can write it with H or without it.

¡Ojalá!  This word with Arab origins is very popular in Spanish and it is used everywhere alike. We use it to express a desire or a hypothetical situation that we hope happens. It is the equivalent of “I wish” or “I hope”. We can use it by itself or in a sentence.

¡Yupi!
